Why our old website kept showing errors (and how we fixed it)

Last winter our old site would sometimes say "Error establishing a database connection" during the morning rush. Other days it showed "There has been a critical error on this website." Both messages scared customers off.

The first meant our cheap hosting couldn't keep up; the second was a plugin update gone wrong. We moved hosts and now test updates on a copy of the site first.
